Real Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is hard to find in most of Virginia. So do it online.

If you have searched for a cognitive behavioral therapist near you, you probably know that true CBT specialists are rare outside of Virginia’s largest metro areas. But every therapist at our practice is licensed to see clients anywhere in the state. Whether you live in Roanoke, Blacksburg, Lynchburg, the Shenandoah Valley, or a town too small to have a therapist at all, you can work with a CBT specialist at our practice – no commute, no settling for whoever happens to have an office nearby.

Real CBT, Not Just Talk

Our therapists create structured treatment plans and follow them, so your therapy feels intentional and purposeful. CBT gets to the root of problems, the thinking and coping habits that are holding you back, and addresses them in ways that last, so you don’t need us forever. Click here to learn more about what CBT is.

Online Therapy Is Effective

Research has consistently found that CBT delivered by video produces outcomes comparable to in-person treatment for anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and insomnia.

One study even found that Cognitive Processing Therapy — a form of CBT specialized for PTSD — worked better over video than in person, probably because we need to take a lot of notes when administering Cognitive Processing Therapy, and that is easier when administered online. Clients who have done both formats often tell us they notice no difference.

What You Need

A private space where you can talk freely, a computer, tablet, or phone with a camera and microphone, and good internet connectivity. You must be physically located in Virginia at the time of your session, since our therapists are only licensed in Virginia.

We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant, easy-to-use video platform that works on a computer, tablet, or phone.

We’re Better Than Better Help

Why not just download BetterHelp or Talkspace? They have shorter wait times and more therapists to choose from.

Because BetterHelp, Talkspace, and LifeStance are all publicly traded companies – or they’re owned by one. Grow Therapy, Headway, and SonderMind are partially owned by venture capitalists. Their purpose is to make profit for investors – not to help people. We call that a conflict of interest. They have a vested interest in hiring therapists who will accept lower pay because they have a hard time finding clients on their own. And they have little interest in making sure that you get the right therapist for you.

We are owned by a Licensed Clinical Psychologist who works in our offices in Charlottesville and Richmond, Virginia. Our number one concern is that you get quality care. We will not put our profits ahead of your welfare. You getting better means us losing your business. And that is the way that we think it should be. You can read about our mission and what drives us here.

If we have an opening, and it is with a therapist who does not have the skills and experience to help you, we will place you on a relatively short wait list. When we put people on wait lists, even for two weeks, they often move on, and we lose money. We will not sacrifice the welfare of our clients for money. Venture capitalists and shareholders will. A lot of people find that it is better to wait for one of our therapists than to find someone immediately on a corporate app.

We Frequently Work with Clients Throughout Virginia

Most of our therapists live in Charlottesville or the suburbs of Richmond. But some of us live in the valley – Grottoes and Staunton, specifically. One of us grew up in the rural outskirts of Harrisonburg, one spent 3 years in Lexington, and one spent most of her life in rural Louisiana. If you are more comfortable working with someone from one of these areas, just tell our scheduler Cindy, and she will try to make it happen.

Our online clients come from all over Virginia. We work with clients from the Roanoke Valley, including Roanoke and Salem, and throughout the New River Valley, including Blacksburg, Christiansburg, and Radford. We work with clients in Lynchburg and across the Shenandoah Valley, from Lexington through Staunton, Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg up to Winchester. In the northern Piedmont, we see clients in Culpeper and in Fauquier, Rappahannock, Clarke, and Warren counties, and in the Fredericksburg area, including Stafford and Spotsylvania counties. And if you live somewhere that is not listed here, that is exactly the point. As long as you are in Virginia, you can see us.

If you are in the Charlottesville or Richmond areas and would prefer to meet in person, we also have offices in Charlottesville, Richmond, and North Chesterfield, and you can switch between in-person and virtual sessions whenever it is convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is online CBT as effective as in-person therapy?
Yes. Multiple studies have found that CBT delivered by video works as well as in-person CBT for anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, and insomnia. The structured, skills-based nature of CBT translates especially well to video.

Do I have to live near Charlottesville or Richmond?
No. Our therapists are licensed throughout Virginia, so you can see us from anywhere in the state, whether that is Danville, Winchester, or anywhere in between. The only requirement is that you are physically in Virginia at the time of your session.

Do you see children or teens online?

In addition to adults, Anna (10+), Jenny and Ariel (12+), and Dr. Young (all ages – see his profile for details) work with kids and teens – though it can be difficult to engage with children online. Only certain children and teens will be able to do it effectively without becoming distracted, and we cannot continue therapy if it is highly unlikely to be effective.

Is online therapy covered by insurance?
Usually, yes. Anthem, Aetna, and Tricare East generally cover teletherapy the same way they cover in-person sessions. It is important that you verify with your insurer. If they ask, the “Place of Service Code” is 10 and the service code is 90837.

What do I need for my sessions?
A private space, a device with a camera and microphone, and good internet connectivity. Before your first session, make sure your connection is reliable. A wired connection or strong Wi-Fi signal makes a real difference.

Can I ever meet my therapist in person?
If you are ever near Charlottesville, Richmond, or North Chesterfield, most of our therapists can see you in one of our offices, and you can switch between virtual and in-person sessions whenever it is convenient.
